Playwright ('The Importance of Being Earnest'), novelist ('The Picture of Dorian Grey'), poet ('The Ballad of Reading Gaol'), essayist and wit. Lived in exile in France after serving prison sentence for homosexuality. Alleged last words whilst dying in a hotel room -"This wallpaper is terrible - one of us will have to go".

Cause of death: acute meningitis following an ear infection.
